Article- Why Learning Leads to Happiness

“Your mind may be the closest thing to the Holy Grail of longevity and happiness. Education has been widely documented by researchers as the single variable tied most directly to improved health and longevity. I often get asked why Feldenkrais?  And challenged to explain why this work is as good as pilates or physical therapy or a chiropractor.  It is not the same, and would actually be quite unfair to compare them.  It is a method of questioning, investigation in the service of learning.  It can be applied to the action of the doing and greatly enhance it but we focus on the part before the doing.  We find the place after imagination and before the musculo-skeletal movement- the place where you can feel the movement, feel the organization, and embody something to feel good about it.  If we are moving all of the time, why can’t it all be interesting and feel amazing?

I have heard many practitioners say you will never be bored again.  Chores- imagine feeling what it is like to put the dishes away and how you can make that feel more organic and simpler by recognizing what you do.  Do you keep your breath and could you use the idea of the whole skeleton being involved and lift one plate into the cabinet from your hands, the next involving your breast bone to make the lifting easier and continue to spread this action from lower to include your pelvis?  Which one was the easiest?  Go ahead try it- try in your imagination, in the feeling, in the doing.  Which one did you enjoy the most?  Could you use the idea that this could be the most enjoyable, sensuous activity you have ever done?  Can you feel everything else melt away?  The mind chatter, the doubt, the stress.  You now have replaced it with curiosity, novelty and intelligence.

Why do we only save this inquiry for the block of people that call their profession as artists?  It is available for all of us.  This article calls it flow.  I think that will become my new word for now, until I get inspired by the next one.

I will continuously try to define and redefine the method in a million different posts but the more ways I can explain, they more dynamic both of our understandings.  Could I call this a method of happiness?  Read the article below….

When I work with Samantha, I like having the freedom to “do it badly” in the spirit of exploration. I have repetitive strain injuries from long hours at the keyboard. After a recent private session, I am now “playing” with how I use my mouse– using more of my whole body, even my chest, to reach for it and move it. Even just a little freedom and awareness goes a long way to revising lifelong habits, and it’s fun.
